Whenever I am abroad, I would walk long distances especially when looking for good bargains. I am sure my traveling friends would agree. Most of the time, I do it to save on fare money. LOL. So, why can’t I do it here? I guess there is less pollution in other countries and they are, more often than not, pedestrian-friendly.

To rise to the challenge, I bought a face mask, an umbrella, a rain coat and a pair of walking shoes. Instead of getting stuck in traffic and having to endure the long and frustrating commute, I walk. Of course, I put on sunblock to protect my skin from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. The simplest guideline for all of us would have to be, “Sit less and move more,” according to close to 2,000-member Philippine Heart Association (PHA) and the husband and wife tandem of fitness gurus, Jim and Toni Saret.

Yes, there’s a direct relationship between time spent sitting and your risk of early mortality of any cause. As your total sitting time increases, so does your risk of an early death.

Sitting for around eight hours a day at the workplace increases the risk of contracting heart disease, cancer and diabetes by 40 percent. Actually, it can cause killer legs, too.

Majority of the world population is in the working age-group. This group are always on the computer. Glued on their seats for eight hours, they lead sedentary lifestyles, while facing different kinds of stress which leads to unhealthy eating (stress eating) and lifestyle. Most of them are unable to engage in appropriate physical activities for their physical and mental well-being. And in worse cases, some do not have the means to cope with stress and maintain mental health.

Eating healthy, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding vices like alcohol and cigarettes are ways of preventing major lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancers as well as other risk factors such as raise blood pressure, raise blood sugar level and obesity. However, awareness and practices of these healthy benefits are still low among the working population

The Philippine Heart Association (PHA), a non-stock, non-profit organization of 1,780 Filipino cardiologists is committed to foster exceptional cardiovascular education and primary care for everyone. Living up to its mission, the PHA aims to do its share on the awareness on preventive and management of heart diseases. The initiative encourages employees to improve their physical and mental well-being, and effectively address sedentary lifestyles by launching a campaign called “Sneakers Friday.”

“Sneakers Friday” capitalizes on promoting physical activity. It is meant to promote workplace health and wellness where personnel are encouraged to wear sneakers, casual top and pants every Friday as a “dress down day.”

Last month, I got to spend a day with blogger friends in Porto Laiya, another prestige project from the developer of Mount Malaraya Golf & Country Club– considered as one of the top golf courses in the world. Porto Laiya is a private residential and beach resort community in Brgy. Ibabao, Laiya, San Juan, Batangas.

The pick-up time was six am on a weekday in McDonald’s EDSA-Buendia branch in Makati City. I live in Cubao and for me to make it on time, I needed to be on the road by 5 AM to avoid the rush hour traffic to the Central Business District of Metro Manila. I have not had any proper sleep after long hours of editing a number of video projects and was feeling under the weather.

At 5 AM, I was still in bed and messaged my blogger friend Erica Poyauan of www.thegirlwiththemujihat.com if she was already on her way. She said she was having second thoughts because she, too, was feeling sick. We checked online again to find out more about Porto Laiya. In no time, I was in the shower preparing for another day of swimming, snorkeling and basking in the sun! Erica and I agreed that we should just go and enjoy! By six in the morning, I was already drinking coffee and had just finished my Sausage McMuffin in McDonald’s EDSA-Buendia branch while Erica… well… was nowhere in sight. She was still on her way, stuck in a horrendous traffic somewhere. She made it in the nick of time nonetheless.

By 7:30-ish in the morning, I was already inside the Active Group‘s van plying EDSA with the other bloggers and real estate agents. I rode shotgun with my backpack of equipment and drone. Hence, I pretty much was quiet and slept through the whole three-hour or so road trip.

It was a smooth and easy ride to Batangas. As we rolled towards Porto Laiya, I could not help my excitement to build up because of the Porto Laiya road signs that darted the road side starting from the STAR Tollway Ibaan Exit up to Porto Laiya’s Main Gate.

It was close to mid-day but we braved the sun to take photos. We were simply captivated by the beauty of this seaside community.

And then it was time to go out into the sea for snorkeling. Off the beach of Porto Laiya is a coral sanctuary. How convenient is that for Porto Laiya residents?

In no time, everyone got on the bamboo raft except me. I needed to fly my drone and take some aerial footage for my vlog. By the time I was done, my friends were already at sea. The daredevil in me said, “I cannot not be on that raft and miss seeing the corals of Laiya!” So I gathered all my strength, grabbed my action camera, put on my goggles, and swam towards the boat. Halfway, I looked into the horizon and saw the still small image of the boat and my friends. With the strong current, I thought I would not be able to make it. The boat was just too far. I looked back at the beach and did some mental calculations. If I go back, I would still swim the same distance, be dead tired and would spend the whole afternoon regretting not being able to see the Laiya reefs teaming with marine life. Darn, I would rather be tired and happy than be tired and sad. So for dear life, I paddled and swam. From a distance, I could already hear my friends cheering me on. It felt like I was in a swimming competition. LOL. “Oh goodness, my mom would kill me”, I thought. Thanks to my fellow blogger, Bette Medina for recording the whole thing on video.

Upon reaching the boat, my friends were ecstatic. Erica was so nervous and even thought that I could not make it. I, myself, could not believe that I made it. LOL. Surprisingly, I did not feel exhausted at all after that dash of a swim. Thanks to the adrenaline rush. We wasted no time and spent the rest of the afternoon at sea communing with nature.

I am glad I pushed through with visiting Porto Laiya. Aside from getting to see this wonder of a place and getting to enjoy its amenities, I was able to meet new blogger friends and reunite with old ones.

Kwikset has always been a part of our household for as long as I can remember. I have always thought that Kwikset was a local brand. I mean why call it Kwikset rather than Quickset, right?

It was only when I attended Kwikset’s Roadshow last March 15, 2018 at the Blue Leaf Filipinas that I learned about Kwikset being the number one selling U.S. lock brand.

I arrived an hour before the start of the roadshow. That is why most of the photos shown here would lack a lot of people in it. LOL. The event was attended by media and potential customers and dealers. I met Elaine Bersamin, Sales Director, at the reception area and told me to go around first while waiting for the event to start. She also offered to safekeep my drone for my convenience.

Dave Albert, Vice President and Managing Director of APAC Spectrum Brands Inc., welcomed everyone and gave a brief history of Kwikset. He said that Kwikset is the largest tubular lock manufacturer in the world with a production output of 250,000 door locks per day. They have manufacturing sites in China, Mexico, the United States of America and the Philippines. Kwikset’s manufacturing site in the Philippines is located in Subic, Olongapo City, Zambales employing close to 5000 Filipinos.

Kwikset, the pioneer in residential locks with a tubular design, was launched in 1946 by Adolf Schoepe and Karl Rhinehart. It was named Kwikset to highlight its speedy installation. In the Philippines, Kwikset has been commercially available since the 1980s.

Kevin Sander, International Brand Manager, discussed Kwikset’s brand premise and promise that is “Made for the world you live in.” And during Kwikset’s Roadshow, we witnessed firsthand how durable, innovative, stylish and secure Kwikset really is.

We were divided into small groups and each group was made to visit three stations in rotation where each of Kwikset’s brand promises of Durability, Innovation and Style were showcased. The groups then reconvened for the fourth brand promise of Security.

Sander showed us how Kwikset locks are strong, secure and reliable.

He put two door knobs, a Kwikset and a competing brand, to the test by soaking them in ammonia. After ten minutes or so, the competing brand corroded and turned black while the Kwikset door knob retained its shiny and golden appearance.

Sander also shared that every one of their products is put through rigorous third party testing and certified to meet or exceed both ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association) standards. All Kwikset products can withstand whatever life throws at them.

Innovation for the world you live in

We then moved to the next station where we learned about Kwikset’s dedication to research and development. Kwikset has innovative locks powered by technology that not only changes how their locks work but more importantly provides convenient features that can change how people live.

Kwikset Electronic Locks

I bring my drone whenever I travel, hence, the hashtag dronescapades and the logo.

Despite the difficulty of riding a jam-packed public utility vehicle, I carry two backpacks, one for my drone and another for my videography gadgets and personal effects. I have seen passengers giving me weird glances, even staring at my drone backpack that is “sitting” next to me. Yes, I would pay extra so my drone can have a dedicated seat inside the jeepney or bus. LOL.

I must admit. Guilty as charged! I am not a light traveler because I bring with me a mini-production house. My brother and fellow travel bloggers can attest to this. Why do I go to such great lengths? Well, I want to capture the whole experience by getting not just ground but also aerial and underwater footage whenever possible.

If you are into authentic Japanese cuisine, then you have to try Nobu Restaurant located at the Level 1 of Nobu South Tower, City of Dreams Manila, Aseana Boulevard corner Macapagal Avenue Brgy.Tambo, Paranaque City. They serve Nobu-unique modern Japanese dishes fused with Peruvian influences.

On February 21, 2018, I had the most wonderful opportunity to feast on a specially prepared seven-course meal comprised of both cold and hot dishes at the world’s most recognized Japanese restaurant Nobu Restaurant . Thanks to Blogapalooza for inviting me to dine and meet with fellow Travel and Lifestyle bloggers.

I arrived with fellow travel blogger Erica Poyauan of thegirlwiththemujihat.com. We met up in the SM Mall of Asia and grabbed a cab to get to the City Of Dreams.

At the reception area, we were welcomed with the usual Japanese greeting  “Irasshaimase!” or “welcome to the store” in English by the accommodating staff.

Nobu Restaurant’s classic and orderly ambiance coupled with the fine luxuries of a five-star hotel no less got me transported back in time when I last visited Japan in May 2016.

Erica and I were then escorted by the Restaurant Manager, Ms. Melanie Dimayuga, to the patio area to meet the rest.

In no time, we were asked to proceed inside where a private dining area was reserved for us. I found the chefs at the sushi bar busy preparing the meals for the guests. Despite that, they agreed to pause and pose for a photo opportunity.

Nobu Restaurant Manila has a total seating capacity of two hundred ninety one (291) people. They have two (2) private dining rooms and two (2) Teppanyaki tables.

They are open daily and below are their operating hours:

To me, the seating arrangement was impeccable because we all got to sit next to someone whom we were meeting for the first time. It was a riot sitting between Me-An Clemente  and  Janelle Lazo Tee as we indulged our way to the very end of this seven-course meal. I might just post a vlog soon.

I must say that the meal selection consisted of seafood, vegetables and Wagyu meat to name a few got me and my taste buds excited! I am no food connoisseur and I will not pretend to be one. Hence, I will be sharing with you how I visualized my taste buds’ reactions to the food assuming that my taste buds had a mind of their own. So here it goes…

ZENSAI

We started with Zensai or  hors d’oeuvre in Nihon-go. Do not be deceived. This small and seemingly simple “taco” dish was explosive. The adage “size does not matter” seemed appropriate to describe it. It prepared my taste buds for what was to come. My taste buds were pretty much warmed-up for some jumping-for-joy moments! #smallbutyummy

FIRST COURSE: SASHIMI DUO

The first course consisted of two equally strong dishes, the Yellow Tail Jalapeno & the Oyster New Style. #notonebuttwo

Oyster New Style 

I had second thoughts of eating the oysters out of fear of getting an upset stomach. I first sniffed one oyster. The aroma that filled my nostrils was reminiscent of my growing up years in the province of Pangasinan.  And the next practical step for me was to open my mouth and succumb to it. Me-An told me that the best way to eat it is to suck and slurp. So I slurped the second one till I burped as  my taste buds swayed to some calming music. #maalaalamokaya

By the way, the Kumamoto Oysters originated from Japan. They were brought to and raised in Australia just to end up in my mouth. #yunlang

Yellow Tail Jalapeno

Next stop was the Yellow Tail Jalapeno. Oh, did I mention that this was just the first course? LOL.

The Yellow Tail or Dalagang Bukid in Filipino melted in my mouth. It was that good that my taste buds were in full synchronicity bowing their heads while chanting in complete unison “we are not worthy” as this world famous sashimi blanketed my palette. #grabesya

Further, the first course came with a pickled relish that cleansed and prepared my palette for the next course.

SECOND COURSE: CHEF’S CHOICE SUSHI

The second course was composed of assorted Nigiri and Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice placed on a rectangular plate that was almost two feet in length.

I asked the waiter where to begin. Do I start from the left to right or otherwise? No further instructions were given. I guess I just got to trust my gut on this one. My taste buds could not agree more as they prepared for this delightful marathon. My taste buds said, “STOP over thinking and just get one ASAP!” #nowna #walanaakongmasabi #bastamasarap

THIRD COURSE: SASHIMI SALAD

The last of the cold dishes, this salad was composed of a lightly sheared big-eyed tuna with mixed greens and Matsuhisa dressing. People close to me know that I am not fond of eating just raw fish. I have always preferred Sushi over Sashimi. But my taste buds told my eyes to close and leave the tasting to them and told my mouth to shut up and partake! And I did… happy I did. That Matsuhisa dressing complemented the tuna.

FOURTH COURSE: PAN ROASTED SNAPPER

The fourth course introduced us to the first hot dish. The perfectly pan-roasted Snapper or Maya-maya in Filipino resting on that golden stash of Miso butter and mixed vegetables such as bok choy, baby corn and shitake star drizzled with sweet chili cilantro sauce on top was a bomb!

“Aaaawww, poor little fish looks so unhappy”, I said. My taste buds did not care and by this time decided to do the Zumba with zest!

FIFTH COURSE: AKA MISO BRAISED WAGYU CHEEKS

The fifth course was Aka Miso Braised Wagyu Cheeks with Soba noodles, onsen egg and Kizami nori. After devouring the succulent pan-roasted Maya-maya, I was already full to the brim. But my taste buds were now out of control and mounting a mass picket.

“Wag you ako pigilan… wag ako… “, they clamored.

“Besides, wagyu is wagyu so why not?”, they added.

SIXTH COURSE: BLACK COD HOT POT

This clear soup looked all too simple but this sixth course cannot be undermined. I thought it was going to be bland and boring. Well, I thought wrong. As always, when it comes to food, the final verdict rests on the sense of taste and not of sight. The perfect blend of tofu, mixed mushrooms and negi was just right to settle down the joyous chaos experienced by my taste buds from the first course to the fifth. The sixth course also made sure that my taste buds had a good cool down, ready for dessert.

SEVENTH COURSE: MISO CAPPUCCINO

Delightfully satisfied with the six courses I just had, I thought that there was nothing better to cap the night than a cup of coffee to get me going on my way home.

And so I picked up the spoon intending to mix that cappuccino.

“This cup of coffee is too small for me”, I thought.

Lo and behold, it was not a coffee beverage. I guess I was not being attentive to John Christian Ochoa when he served the last course. Or was it Fidel Cebreros? I can not recall. I was too engrossed sipping my soup that I missed the detailed introduction and whoever delivered it. LOL.

Being a sweet-tooth myself, I must say that this Miso Cappuccino is probably one of the best desserts I have ever had. The candied pecan loaded at the bottom of that vanilla miso custard revved up my already calm taste buds. They stood at attention as they crazily waited for that spoonful to land in my mouth. I finished this last course in less than two minutes! We (my taste buds and I) wanted to ask for seconds. LOL.

Truth be told, this Miso Cappuccino got us all energized that we just kept on and on with our exchanges. We went around the restaurant to take more selfies and photos of the place, too.

It was already past 10:30 in the evening when we decided to call it a night. We started dinner at seven. We had so much fun that I lost track of time. I did not expect that this was going to be a seven-to-eleven seven-course dinner affair.

Erica and I were among the last ones to leave the venue. We took the 11 PM City Of Dreams bus en route to the SM Mall of Asia and went our separate ways. I got home feeling great and not overfed. Tucking into bed, I messaged my brother in Dubai who is a big fan of Japanese cuisine to tell him that we visit Nobu Restaurant Manila the next time he comes home. He said yes and even commented on my Facebook post that featured the photos of the seven-course meal.

Oh, by the way, I did not get an upset stomach.

Facial Cleaning by Let’s Face It for only P245.00 is definitely a hit.

It is probably the most affordable decent facial treatment in the metro. No frills. Also, it includes two (2) free checkup.

Let’s Face It’s Facial Cleaning starts with a facial massage using a mild lotion-like cleanser.

It is so soothing that a blogger such as myself could easily fall asleep and forget to take photos.

Then, the face is subjected to two types of rotating brushes to gently exfoliate dead cells.

To prep the face for the steamer, a moisturizing agent is gently massaged onto the skin.

Eye patches are then placed to protect the sensitive eye area from the heat of the steamer. The face is left under the steamer for about ten (10) minutes.

After the steamer, a vacuum is used to suck whatever debris that may have been stuck to unclog the pores.

Then, it is time for pricking to remove whiteheads and blackheads.

After pricking, a mesh is placed on the face. The laser then helps to close the pores.

An antibiotic is applied onto the face to help prevent infection.

To cap it off, a sunblock is applied to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

It is recommended to avoid wetting the face with water or sweat in the next twelve (12) hours.

The whole procedure takes no more than forty-five minutes.

Pre-Dive Lecture

Arkipelago Divers offers PADI scuba diving courses and programs for all levels of divers.

They also rent out equipment and can arrange day trips to other nearby beaches and islands.

How To Get to Puerto Galera

Getting to Puerto Galera from Cubao is easy and affordable. You need to take a bus to bring you to Batangas Pier and a bangka (boat) to take you to Puerto Galera. There are a number of buses servicing the route of Cubao to Batangas Pier.

I took a JAM Liner Bus. The bus left at 8 in the morning. Traffic was smooth and easy. It was a Sunday. On regular days, the trip from Cubao to Batangas would take an average of 3 hours. I got off at the Batangas Grand Terminal, instead of the Batangas Pier, by 10 AM to meet Mike Zuniga of Katooga.ph. We needed to do some errands in SM Batangas. Click here for that blog post.

From Batangas Pier, it would take an hour to an hour and a half ferry trip to get to Sabang Port. The Ferry ticket to Puerto Galera is 230 pesos. By the way, there is an Environmental User Fee of P50 for arriving passengers, a Homeland and Tourist Safety and Security Fee of P 20 and a Terminal Fee of P10.

Coming home

On the way back, Mike and I left Sabang Port at 1 PM. We arrived in Batangas Pier by about 2 PM. Then, Mike took another bus to Alabang while I looked for a bus to Cubao.

The traffic on the way back home was so bad. Fortunately, I had the chance to ride a premium bus operated by Gold Star Bus Company with plane-like seats, television and toilet on board. The bus left Batangas Pier at about 3 PM and was caught in the grueling EDSA rush hour traffic by 6 PM. I got home by 8 PM.

That is the whole story of my Discover Scuba Diving with Arkipelago Divers. I will be uploading a vlog soon with aerial and underwater shots. Stay tuned!

Acuatico Beach Resort, a premiere resort south of Manila, is lighting up stars to share the hope for a bright future to deserving students of the Laiya National High School K-12 Plus Curriculum, San Juan, Batangas. Hotel guests may purchase stars to decorate the Christmas Tree in the Oceano Restaurant for only P50 (small), P100 (medium) or P200 (large). Proceeds of which will be used to provide the necessary materials and resources to support the the K-12 Plus Program.

During the launch dinner of the Light Up A Star Charity Program last November 28, 2017, Ms. Simonette Gusi, owner of  Acuatico Beach Resort, shared that the main objective of this program is to ensure the youth’s future job placement in the resort. Last year, Acuatico Beach Resort was able to provide workbooks for the Food and Beverage Service and linens for the Housekeeping Service curricula. There are plans to expand the program to include a Kitchen/Culinary curriculum.

According to Ms. Tess Samaniego, MarCom Manager, the Light Up A Star Charity Program is already on its third year. Currently, there are nine Grade-12 students and six Grade-11 Students who are undergoing training in the hotel.

Mr. Marcel Haessner of the German Development Program, who just flew in from Germany with his family, said that he is amazed at the Filipino hospitality, a trait that is sought after in the Hospitality Industry. Through this K-12 Plus Program, students in training would  have the opportunity to further develop skills that will be value-adding when they finally join the workforce. He was happy to see how the already deployed students in the resort have developed over time. They have become more confident and personable. He admitted though that there are challenges especially so that year on year the number of students is growing.  Currently, there are almost 300 students enrolled in the program.

Ms. Josephine Rosales, Principal of the Laiya National Highschool, said that all 256 students who underwent the assessment last school year for the Housekeeping Curriculum passed. For this school year 2017-2018, there are 120 Grade-11 students and 160 Grade 12 students who will undergo the assessment for Food and Beverage Curriculum. She is hopeful that all 280 students will pass and be placed across the 60 participating resorts in Laiya, San Juan, Batangas.

Further,the Light Up A Star Program was instrumental in training teachers during the launch in 2013. Twenty of whom were supported by Acuatico Beach Resort. Aside from the Laiya National High School, three other Senior High Schools are included in the program: Palahanan National High School, Buhaynasapa National High School and San Juan Senior High School.

EAT OR EEK? Here is another featured budget meal for today, i.e., Taco Bell’s Combo Meal No. 6 composed of 1 piece of Crunchy Taco, 1 piece of Beef Burrito, 1 small bag of nachos sprinkles and 1 16-oz cup of soda. All for P159.00.

VERDICT: EAT

After three hours, I was still full and could still smell the rich taste of the Beef Burrito in my breath. Lol. 😁😂😎 The bread was soft but not soggy. Deym, I ate the Beef Burrito as if there was no tomorrow! It was that good. Yum! Yum!

Moving on to the Crunchy Taco, another good deal! The taco was served warm. It was crunchy filled with just the right amount of crisp lettuce, grated cheddar cheese, minced onions, ground beef and not so spicy red chili sauce.

To me, eating tacos is taking a trip down memory lane… Remember that famous beef taco sold in Greenhills? I do not know if that particular food kiosk still exists. Back in the day, my college block mates and I would travel all the way from the Ateneo to Greenhills during breaks just to feast on some and we would cap it off with a cup of that thirst-quenching sugarcane juice. Oh, the good old days!

The nacho chips is good, too, sprinkled with a sweet and spicy flavoring. I wonder if this is a house brand.

Well, this is it for now. I am definitely going back to Taco Bell to try their other budget meals.

The Digital Marketer of the Year Award was judged based
on the partner’s active participation in promoting the partnership’s
proposition by creating effective contents using different relevant digital
channels, not limited to SNS. As the future of travel gets more exciting with
the continuous thrive of technology, these efforts to actively inject useful
information and connect with members online definitely helps the journey of
every traveller.
