Last Saturday, my friends invited me to The Tides Hotel for an eat-all-you-can Mongolian Barbecue for only 299 pesos per person.

It was also our friend’s birthday celebration. Happy birthday Sheilla! By the way, your birthday speech at the last part of the vlog was impeccable!

The Tides Hotel is located in D’Mall Boracay Station 2. They open their Mongolian Grill on the roof deck from 6 PM to 10 PM. It is open air dining and lets you enjoy Boracay’s sea breeze.

The establishment follows the Minimum Health Standards. So, you can be sure that you are safe while enjoying your dinner and listening to the live music.

The tables and chairs are set up to allow social distancing. You also need to show your QR code or Online Health Declaration upon arrival.

The last time I ate here was last year. Then, we would line up at the buffet table and grill. Now, to curb COVID-19, you have to accomplish a menu checklist and endorse it to the waiter. The chef will then prepare the dish for you and have it delivered to your table when ready.

Boracay Reopening

Boracay reopened its borders to tourists coming from areas under general community quarantine on October 1, 2020. Hotels/resorts on the island and local airlines have also slashed their room rates by as much as 50 to 75% to attract tourists. Despite this, tourism on the island has been in a slump because of  the COVID-19 scare. Moreover, the exorbitant cost of the RC-PCR test is a major deterent for tourists to visit the island. 6. Frendz Resort and Hostel Boracay

Frendz Resort and Hostel Boracay is a multi-awarded hostel on Boracay island. It is located in Station 2. The ambiance is rustic and exudes an island vibe. Before moving to Boracay, this was one of my favorite places to stay with friends while on vacation.

They have three room categories. The room rates are good for two persons.

Frendz also has dormitory-type rooms for only P 600 per person per night. If you do not mind sharing a room with a stranger, you can stay in one of their dorms. All their dorm rooms follow 50% occupancy policy in compliance with the Minimum Health Standards to curb COVID-19.

For an 8-bed dormitory, only four persons are allowed; for a 6-bed room, only three persons are allowed; and for a 4-bed dorm only two guests are allowed.

Establishments follow the minimum health standards and are regularly inspected by the local government unit of Malay. 4. Boracay Workers are required to present the following:

This is the latest list of requirements to enter Boracay. Some of my friends find the requirements a bit tedious. I believe these are in place to curb COVID-19. These requirements could change, too. There are plans of removing the Negative RT-PCR Test as a requirement to enter Boracay.

On October 1, 2020, Boracay reopened its borders to local tourists from areas classified under General Community Quarantine (GCQ). And, this was the third reopening in a span of two years. Each one for a different reason. The first was on October 26, 2018, after a 6-month closure to rehabilitate the island. The second was on June 16, 2020 to tourists from the Western Visayas Region, after three months of quarantine.

Boracay reopening after a 6-month rehabilitation

On October 26, 2018, exactly two years ago today, Boracay reopened after six months of closure for rehabilitation. I booked one of the early flights to be one of the first few to capture the island’s “restored” beauty on video. I stayed on the island for two weeks and was able to publish a vlog on my Youtube channel. Watch it here.

Carpe diem

In January 2019, I came back for a two-week vacation. Opportunity knocked to work and lead a more peaceful life on the island. I knew I had to seize the chance. In barely two months, I finished all of my commitments in Metro Manila. And on April 9, 2019, I packed my bags, got on a boat and left for the island for good.

Long story short, I ended up juggling three jobs: a Marketing Officer of a travel agency, a Managing Partner of an apartelle and a bar tender. I was on a roll! Things were looking pretty good.

Strike 1: Ursula

Tourism started to pick up. Then, a super storm, known locally as Typhoon Ursula, struck unleashing ruin on Boracay a day prior to Christmas of 2019. Ursula left the island, literally, in the dark for a good three weeks. We spent the holidays without electricity, telecommunication and internet connection. None of my family and friends knew the extent of Ursula’s destruction. Power and telecommunication were only restored by the second week of January 2020.

Strike 2: Taal

We, on the island, remained steadfast and had high hopes in recovering our business losses as we geared up for the influx of tourists for the Chinese New Year celebration. Then, Taal, the world’s smallest volcano, erupted on January 12, 2020. Flights and hotel bookings got cancelled. Tourists got stranded. Business on the island slowed down yet again.

I said to myself, “This, too, shall pass.”

I checked my booking calendar and saw that I still had guest reservations for the upcoming summer and Holy Week. Enough to tide me over. Better days ahead, or so I thought.

Strike 3: COVID-19

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organinization declared the ‘2019 novel coronavirus’ or ‘2019-nCoV (COVID-19) as a global pandemic. This resulted to the Philippine government’s decision to close the country’s borders on March 16, 2020. That was when everything started to crumble. No more travel inquiries. No more apartelle bookings. More cancellations. No more bar to tend. No more tourists to entertain. It was time to close shop and let go.

By April 2020, I was jobless. Even my online work as a marketing consultant was put to a halt. I entertained myself during the lockdown and created a Tiktok account.

Boracay reopening to Western Visayas

On June 16, 2020, Boracay reopened to tourists coming from Western Visayas. The low influx of visitors was not enough to reboot the island’s economy. The same beachcombers frequented the beach front day in and day out.

Boracay reopening to the rest of the country under GCQ

On October 1, 2020, after nearly seven months, Boracay reopened to local tourists from areas classified under General Community Quarantine (GCQ).

Requirements for tourists from GCQ areas:

• RT-PCR (Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) Negative result with three days (72 hours) validity before arrival. Here is a list of hospitals with RT-PCR Tests ranging from 1750-2000 pesos:

Here is why you should visit Boracay now and what to expect:

COVID-free Paradise

The country’s top island destination remains to be COVID-free and we aim to keep it that way. Safety protocols are in place and are strictly adhered to by the establishments. We religiously wear our face masks and shields and we regularly wash our hands. We maintain social distancing, too, and we expect our visitors to do the same.

Budget-Friendly Rates

Take advantage of the budget-friendly rates offered by some of the luxury hotels on the island. Book a 5-star accommodation at an uber discounted rate. Discounts range from 50% to 75% off published rates. Average room rate per night is Php 2500, good for two adults. If you are lucky, you might even get free breakfast.

The Henann Group of Resorts has partner third party providers that offer RT-PCR Tests at a decent cost.

White Beach All To Yourself

If you love peace and quiet, Boracay is perfect. Not too many distractions. Just you, the sun, sand and sea. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Based on the Boracay Tourists Arrival Data as of October 25, 2020, the average daily number of tourists arrivals is 78. Slowly, tourism is starting to pick up. However, this is a far cry from the average daily number of tourists during the first 10 months of 2019, i .e. 5,808.

Amazing Sunsets

No sunset in Boracay is the same. Watch the picturesque sunset in awe while enjoying your favorite cocktail in one of the beach front restaurants or while strolling on the beach for that much needed exercise or while taking a dip in the crystal clear waters of Boracay.

Swimming Period

Swimming is allowed from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in designated parts of White Beach and Puka Beach. Senior citizens and children are allowed to swim.

Curfew

There is an islandwide curfew from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day. As the great Benjamin Franklin aptly put it, “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” 🤪

Stumbling Blocks

Aside from potentially acquiring COVID-19, the exorbitant cost of the RT- PCR Test is a major factor preventing the local tourists from ultimately visiting Boracay.

Last week, I got a call from a “celebrity” friend. She is planning to celebrate her birthday on the island this November with family and friends. She told me that the unit cost of the RT-PCR Test or swab test is a whopping Php 10,000. The cost of the RT-PCR Test is way too expensive than an airline roundtrip ticket and a 5-star hotel accommodation combined. I hope the government can do something to regulate it. The swab test is non-negotiable as we strive to be COVID-free. I spoke to some of the locals. An E-trike driver told me that he would rather have less tourists than put himself and his family at risk of getting infected.

Picking Up The Pieces

Admittedly, it has been a long and arduous journey. This is true not just for me but for everyone living on the island. Seven months and counting. COVID-19 made me realize a lot of things. One of them is to seize the day. We are all on borrowed time. Let us make use of this extra time to better ourselves and our relationships.

I had to put many of my plans on hold. Some cancelled. Sad and scary even. Pushed to the wall. Helpless. Sometimes I would find myself floating in the deeper part of the sea, looking up the sky, imagining (waiting) for a comet to suddenly appear to come crashing towards me. Oh well… life goes on… Life must go on. Thanks to my family and friends who constantly remind me to keep the Faith. No way but up, Boracay. Pick up the pieces and look forward to another Boracay reopening soon… this time to the world.

After three months of quarantine, Boracay reopens its ports on June 16, 2020 to tourists coming from the Western Visayas region comprised of the provinces of Antique, Aklan, Guimaras, Capiz, Negros Occidental and Iloilo.

At the port of entry (Caticlan Jetty Port or Tabon Port), tourists must undergo the usual temperature checks, mandatory wearing of masks, and other safety protocols imposed by the Local Government Unit of Malay and the Departmenf Of Tourism to visit Boracay.

All tourists must present a hotel booking voucher from an accredited hotel for the duration of their stay on the island and an Identification Card to prove that they are, indeed, residents of Western Visayas.

Boracay Do’s and Don’ts

Below are the do’s and don’ts when visiting Boracay:

• Do dispose your garbage properly
• Do smoke on the designated smoking areas
• Do avoid using single use plastic bags instead use an eco bag
• Do use public rest room, toilet or lavatory
• Do all establishment maintain the cleanliness on their respective areas
• Don’t litter on the beach and in other public areas
• Don’t smoke on the beach and in other public areas
• Don’t extract or collect sand and pebbles in the beach areas
• Don’t carry or clutch glass bottles or any beverages in the beach areas
• Don’t urinate or defecate in any public place

The above are Municipal Ordinances. Anyone caught doing what is not allowed by law will be dealt with accordingly by the authorities with corresponding fines and penalties. There are roving police officers and marshals. Hence, it is in your best interest to just follow the law while enjoying Boracay.

From the airport, go DIY and proceed to the tricycle queue just across Caticlan Airport. I shared a tricycle ride with Riczi Dio whom I just met at the queue. Tricycle fare is Php 50 per person. You can also rent the whole tricycle by your lonesome. You just need to pay Php 100.

The number of tourists allowed to enter the island is limited and monitored. Ensure that you have your hotel voucher with you upon registration at the Caticlan Jetty Port. If you are traveling with family or friends who will be staying with you in your hotel room, make sure that their names are listed on the hotel voucher as well.

Once verified, proceed to the counter to pay the following:

• Pump boat fare Php 25
• Terminal fee Php 100
• Environmental fee Php 75

The boat ride from Caticlan Port to Cagban Port was smooth and only took twenty minutes. At the Cagban Port, Riczi and I shared another tricycle ride for Php 120 or Php 60 per person to bring us to Boracay D’Mall where we would go our separate ways. E-trikes are also available. Fare is Php 20 per head. The tricycle ride from Cagban Port to D’Mall took about thirty minutes versus the usual fifteen minutes because of slow traffic and ongoing road and drainage constructions.

The New Boracay

I stayed in Boracay for eleven days, probably the longest I have ever been on an island. Why? Well, simply because I fell in love with the place again. Despite the ongoing road construction and establishment repairs, it seemed that everything was in its proper place. It felt like the Boracay I first saw way back in the early days. But then again, this is me. Some like it wild and cluttered. I like it serene and clean.

I had a chance to talk to Tita Connie, owner of Red Coconut Hotel. She has been living on the island since 1982. She shared that after six months of closure, Boracay now looks like the Boracay of the 1990s. She feels sad though that the locals had to suffer the brunt of the closure. There was practically no business going on on the island for six months. But she believes that the closure was necessary to save Boracay from being a cesspool. I have spoken to a number of locals as well and they all feel the same thing. After six months of rest, they are now more than ready to welcome tourists on the island.

Yes! No more bed mats or umbrellas near the shore. No clutter. All beach front properties have to follow the 25+5-meter no-build zone. This means that there should be no private structures built within the 30-meter easement between the shore and the beachfront property.

One afternoon, I went jogging from Station Two to Station One. It was only a day after typhoon #Rosita and I noticed that the strong waves brought by habagat (south wind) have pushed ashore a number of garbage.

On the beach of Station One, I found a big ziploc plastic bag. I picked it up. After a few steps, I saw candy and Rebisco wrappers. I picked them up and put them in the ziploc bag. Then, I saw one and yet another trash. Picked them up and placed them in the bag. Not soon enough, the big ziploc bag was already full of plastic trash I picked up from the shores of Station One.

Near Station Two, I saw an empty sack. I placed the already full ziploc bag inside and continued my way picking trash. By the time I reached the front of our hotel, my sack was already heavy and full of plastic garbage. I gave the sack of garbage to the hotel staff for disposal.

I felt proud of myself because I was able to contribute in my own little way in cleaning the newly reopened Boracay. So when you do get to visit Boracay or any of our beautiful islands, please be responsible and leave no trash behind. I was guilty of it in the past.

I also hope that more trash bins are installed in Stations One and Two like the ones donated by The Juan Effect of Cebu Pacific Air in Stations Two and Three.

Kudos also to the staff / volunteers of Department of Environment and Natural Resources for regularly collecting trash on the beautiful beach of Boracay.

I will be back very soon. Booked my tickets already for February 2019. I might be back even before that though. And when I do, I hope to see the same, if not better, Boracay.
