Today’s featured budget meal is Buddy’s Regular Lucban Longganisa with a cup of rice. All for P 145.00. Longganisa is Filipino Pork Sausage made from ground pork (sometimes chicken or beef). It is a derivative of the Spanish chorizo. In the Philippines, there are regional variations, each using a unique blend of spices and seasonings.

VERDICT: EAT

I am not really fond of eating longganisa because of the big pieces of ground fat found in a regular longganisa. However, Buddy’s Lucban Longganisa has that good mix of meat and fat seasoned with just the right amount of spices. Each order comes in twelve pieces and one has to bring a buddy to finish it. I guess that’s why the restaurant is called Buddy’s. Their servings are too big for one and are meant to be shared.

Eating at Buddy’s has always been a treat and a trip down memory lane. I guess I have this thing for associating restaurants to good memories and people that I miss. Hahaha. My former housemates and I would regularly head over to Buddy’s Kalayaan to feast on their famous Pancit Lucban back in the day when we were all starting out in life… too fresh out of college to eat home-cooked meals or too lazy to prepare one.

I have always thought that salted duck egg or “itlog na maalat” in the vernacular was and has always been a Filipino delicacy. It is surprising to know that it actually originated from China. It is made by soaking duck eggs in damp and salted charcoal.

In the Philippines, salted duck eggs are dyed red to distinguish them from fresh ones. A popular method of curing the eggs is through the “Pateros style” whereby the fresh eggs are individually dipped in a cake batter made of clay from anthills and termite mounds, table salt and water. The eggs are then packed in boxes wrapped in newspapers and stored away at room temperature for two weeks. The cured eggs are then cleaned and boiled in low heat for thirty minutes.

I personally love eating “itlog na maalat” with fresh tomatoes, fried fish and super garlic fried rice. I am salivating as I write this. LOL.

Now, there is another way of eating salted eggs: CHIPIPZ Salted Egg Chips! Wow! I get to eat two of my favorites, i.e. potato chips and salted eggs, in one snack! CHIPIPZ has been doing the rounds on Facebook lately and I have been hearing from friends how they love it. I did not want to get left behind so I gave it a taste test on the first episode of “EAT OR EEK?” on my Youtube channel.

In 2015, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) with the other government agencies and non-government organizations released an Earthquake Contingency Plan for the Philippines.

Therein, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned that in case of an earthquake in Metro Manila, the West Valley Fault spanning 100 kilometers which passes through Bulacan, Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Muntinlupa, Rizal, Cavite and Laguna, may cause a 7.2 magnitude quake or higher.

Should “The Big One” happen, it is estimated that over 30,000 individuals may die and over 100,000 may be injured. The strong ground shaking may also result to the regional separation of Metro Manila to quadrants due to the collapse of buildings and bridges.

To carry out evacuation and rescue operations efficiently, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) divided Metro Manila into four quadrants. Each quadrant is designated an operation center and staging area which will also serve as evacuation camps.

Further, all athletic fields, sport arenas, memorial parks, churches and gyms that will be designated by the local government units (LGUs) will be used as evacuation centers for Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Pasig River will serve as an alternate route for rescue and relief personnel.

Option 2:

Take a twelve-hour bus ride from Cubao to Caramoan via Raymond Bus and then a ten-minute land trip Casita Mia Bed and Breakfast from the bus terminal. Long but scenic road trip indeed!
