Ecological Waste Management Summit
Last Saturday, January 27, 2018, I had the opportunity to attend the Ecological Waste Management Summit (E Summit) at the ABS CBN Vertis Tent, Quezon City. This was held by the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in observance of the 17th Anniversary of Republic Act 9003 and the Fourth Zero Waste Month from January 25 to 27, 2018.
The event aimed to further boost the DENR’s continuous efforts in enhancing public awareness and understanding of environmental issues and concerns, focusing on practical knowledge for effective solid waste management at source, which includes segregation, composting and recycling.
The exhibit booths showcased numerous environmental products, technologies and services from various Local Government Units (LGUs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), government agencies and the private sector. I will post a separate blog and vlog about this so stay tuned.
Also, the summit offered seminars and talks on the current environmental situation, laws and regulations, technological innovations, and sustainable goals. They also conducted workshops on practical ways of saving the planet.
I sat in one of the seminars about Urban Gardening by Mr. Mark Nello Alvarez of the Agricultural Training Institute. With the ever increasing population and congestion in highly urbanized cities like Metro Manila, Urban Gardening presents a viable option to urban dwellers to grow their own food and promote organic farming. I also live in a midrise condominium in the city and I thought that this talk would be value-adding. Allow me to share to you what I have learned below.
Instead of throwing away your plastic bottles, most of which end up in the ocean unfortunately when not recycled, you can do Container Gardening.
Container Gardening is raising vegetables in recycled containers such as mineral water plastic bottles, old tires, old barrels, old styrofoam, old pipes, etc. The added greenery will not only beautify your space but will also provide a relaxing environment since green is a restful and quiet color.
Urban Gardening likewise gives you an opportunity to do Edible Landscaping which utilizes plants such as vegetables, herbs, spices and selected fruit crops instead of ornamental plants that are commonly used in conventional landscaping.
I have a mini garden in my condominium comprised of two (2) plants. LOL. Both plants are ornamental. Super LOL. I should start planting edible plants in recycled containers soon!
How To Start Your Own Urban Garden
1. Choose what to plant.
According to Alvarez, the various plants for Urban Gardening are:
Leafy vegetables like pechay, mustard, lettuce, sweet potato, malabar spinach, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower
Root of bulb crops like sweet potato, onion, garlic, carrots, raddish, sugar beets and turnips (singkamas)
Beans like string beans, mungbeans (munggo), lima beans, snow peas (chicharo)
Fruit vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, sweet peppers and okra
The vegetables that can be grown in containers are:
Vine fruits like squash, cucumber, watermelon, muskmelon, bittergourd (ampalaya), bottle gourd (upo), wintermelon (kundol), dishrag gourd (patola) and chayote (sayote)
Tree vegetables like horse radish (malungay), sesban (katuray) and breadfruit (camansi)
Herbal plants like thyme, rosemary, basil and oregano among others
Mushroom species like pleurotus (oyster mushroom) and black fungus (tainga ng daga)

Look for available farm tools, equipment, inputs and appropriate planting containers. If you do not have any, you can use old kitchen utensils such as forks and spoons for your mini urban garden.
3. Start planting.
Once you have the seeds and resources, you can start planting. Alvarez recommends buying organic soil since finding suitable soil for planting in Metro Manila is close to impossible. Click here for the list of places where you can buy organic soil.
3. Ensure proper care and management.
Once planting has been completed, the next job is to maintain the plants through fertilizer application, watering and weeding or removing unwanted plants from the growing area.
Know the difference when buying fertilizers. Alvarez shared that synthetic fertilizers feed the plant while organic fertilizers feed the soil which in turn feeds the plant. Ask the vendor, too, about the frequency of using the types of fertilizers.
With the rising cost of inorganic fertilizers, although taxing, using organic fertilizers is more favorable to the pocket and to Mother Nature. I came across a good read on how to prepare an organic fertilizer. Click here.

4. Harvest and enjoy your produce.
One of the simple joys I enjoy the most when I am home in Pangasinan is harvesting fresh produce from our backyard. I think our Mom has planted every single fruit and vegetable there is -from dragonfruit to pomegrenate. Now she is into herbs and spices. Who would have thought that my Mom had a green thumb? Even she is surprised.
My Dad has also become fond of planting. The last time I visited him in Pampanga, I brought home two (2) sacks of various fresh produce from his backyard.
I cannot wait for the day that I get to harvest my own produce here in Metro Manila. Heck! Both of my parents are good gardeners! There is no reason why I cannot be one, right? I must admit though that it will be challenging to come up with my own urban garden given the limited space that I have in my condo and the frequent travels I will be doing this year. But, as they say, if there is a will, there is a way. Perhaps, I will start with onions. LOL. I will keep you posted.

To get myself started on this road to fitness, I began reading online about ways on how to maintain my weight aside from limiting my food intake. I foresee that I will not be able to help myself from eating like a horse in the coming days since the target for this year is to gain muscle mass. Do allow me to share with you what I have learned so far.
Sleeplessness May Lead To Weight Gain
Aside from recharging the brain, I learned that getting enough sleep regularly can help prevent weight gain.
According to a published study by Charles A. Czeisler, PhD, MD, a recognized American physician and the Baldino Professor of Sleep Medicine and Director of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, a week or two of sleep curtailment increases appetite and food intake.Further, night shift work is associated with increased risk of obesity, diabetes, stroke and death. Sleeplessness slows down metabolism. This explains why I have not been losing weight despite strictly following my no-rice diet lately.
Recommended Sleep Hours
Sleeping is probably one of my favorite hobbies if I may call it! Given the chance, I would and could stay in bed and sleep for two days in a row! Who would not? That is how much I love sleeping. But how much sleep does an adult really need?
Based on these recommendations, I clearly need to modify my sleeping habits because I only get five (5) hours of sleep tops on regular days. As a video editor, there are days (or nights) when I need to work myself to the hilt just to finish a project. Also, I prefer editing at night because I think that is when my creativity is at its peak. To compensate then for the lost sleep, I would sleep in the next day.
According to Czeisler, taking quick naps of only twenty (20) to thirty (30) minutes are recommended for the sleep deprived. However, habitual daytime naps are also not good as it would chronically disrupt ones sleeping patterns.
Darn. I never thought that not getting enough sleep and getting too much of it by sleeping in can put my health at risk! As my former professor used to say, “too much or too little of anything kills.”
Below are some helpful tips from the National Sleep Foundation:
Stick To A Sleep Schedule, Even On Weekends
To those who cannot avoid staying up late at night for a living like me, Czeisler shared that consistency is key. The National Sleep Foundation recommends to decide on a reasonable sleeping and waking time and then stick to it even during weekends.
This means I need to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up the next day at the same time every day. No more sleeping in for me then. This will condition the body in keeping a regular sleeping pattern.
Unfortunately, there are so many factors that keep us from getting regular and adequate sleep. Experts say one of which is light exposure at night. Exposure to bright lights before bedtime disrupts our body clocks by affecting the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that maintains the body’s circadian rhythm. Hence, before bedtime, they recommend to avoid bright lights coming from televisions, laptops, mobile phones and even your bedside LED alarm clock.
Admittedly, I do not know if I can avoid bright lights before bedtime because I do my video editing at night and that alone exposes me to a lot of bright light coming from my MAC. And when not editing, I would be blogging on my phone. I need to work on this badly soon.
I have, however, refrained from turning on the bright LED room lights at home. Now, I rely mostly on desk lamps at night. This has not only significantly reduced my monthly electric bills but I guess has also improved my sleeping habits.
As shared in my previous post, I have made it a conscious effort to walk more lately. One of my consultancy jobs is a good twenty-minute walk from my house. So instead of taking a cab, I decided to grab this opportunity to break a sweat by walking to and from work thrice weekly. It not only helps me save fare money, it also improves the quality of my sleep. Frequenting the gym is still a work in progress though but I know I will get my rhythm soon.
Beware Of Hidden Sleep Stealers, Like Alcohol and Caffeine
I am a regular coffee drinker and can gulp two cups of black coffee in the morning. However, unless it is necessary to stay up late, it is no caffeine for me after three (3) in the afternoon. Otherwise, I would keep on tossing and turning at night.
The recommended sleeping hours constitute one-third of our lives more or less. Thus, it is important to choose a comfortable mattress and pillows that can support the body weight without straining it. Evaluate Your Bedroom To Ensure Ideal Temperature, Sound and Light
Sound. I am lucky to have neighbors who value sleep and are considerate. No unnecessary noises at night. Also, videoke singing until the wee hours in the morning is no longer allowed in our barangay (neighborhood).
On some nights, to put me in the snooze mood, I play soothing nature sounds such as ocean waves, raindrops or rain forest using a mobile app that I downloaded.
Temperature. According to experts, the ideal temperature to initiate sleep is 15 to 19 degrees Celsius. If you are using an air conditioning unit, adjust the thermostat within this range. Otherwise, ensure that your electric fan is in good running condition all the time. Here is a funny vlog on how to clean your electric fan.
Practice A Relaxing Bedtime Ritual
I guess I have yet to figure out a relaxing bedtime ritual because currently my bedtime ritual is reading online using my Ipad and this exposes me to a lot of bright light. Perhaps, I should go back to reading actual books soon.
Sleep is vital especially now that I want to be back in shape. That is why I am making it a priority to get adequate and regular sleep at night. I will fix my schedule so I can do my editing more during the day and enjoy and reap the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Good luck to me.

Every December, especially in recent years, I would come up with one… Yes… just one New Year’s Resolution and made sure that I would stick by it and pull through in the next twelve (12) months. Below are some of my past New Year’s Resolutions and how I achieved them.
My 2017 New Year’s Resolution: Learn Adobe
After receiving a notice of redundancy in June 2016 and leaving my previous role as a Regional Brand Manager for Asia Pacific in July 2016, I immediately went job hunting. I updated my online resumes in Jobstreet and LinkedIn and even activated new ones on Workabroad.ph, Jobrapido, etc. I connected with headhunters. I applied for more than fifty (50) job vacancies here and abroad and went to a number of job interviews (too many to mention). Despite all of these efforts, come Christmas Day of 2016 I was still jobless. The roles that I wanted were, for some odd reason, elusive. I was going nowhere or so I thought. I had to take control and needed to reinvent myself by learning new skills and, for my sanity, reignite my passion for visual story telling. Hence, for 2017, my New Year’s resolution was to learn and re-learn Adobe programs such as Premiere, Photoshop, Lightroom and After Effects. Six months later, I found myself doing my first Corporate Audio-Visual Presentation Project for a former colleague.
In 2016, I started this #roadtofitness. Oh and I must say that it was, has been and will always be one circuitous road for a sweet tooth like me. I realized then that I was not getting any younger and only getting fatter every minute. To be specific, my 2016 New Year’s resolution was to shed extra thirty (30) pounds of fat.
I left film school in 2009. Rather than pursuing a career in the Arts, for job security (or so I thought), I went corporate and managed consumer brands. Working in a corporate setting, sitting for twelve (12) hours or more from Monday to Friday, driving to work for at least two (2) hours a day in Metro Manila traffic and indulging in front of the television for at least two (2) hours while having dinner to treat myself after a long day’s work for the past so many years were just a few of the many factors that led to my weight gain. I would dread the sight of weighing scales in the house… in fact, in any house. Being overly stressed from work, I would succumb to the calling of my comfort foods like Conti’s Mango Bravo and Banapple’s Banoffee Pie and started putting on extra pounds. I weighed 170 lbs.
In contrast to 2008 when I was a film student under the late Direk Marilou Diaz Abaya, I was physically active. Very often, I would be assigned to take on the role of either an Assistant Director or Art Director. Both roles would require being up and about and all over the place. I was also very disciplined in following my work out schedules and that would be at least three times a week. I weighed 139 lbs.
To achieve my 2016 New Year’s resolution, I needed to modify my lifestyle specifically my eating habits. I learned that exercise alone will not do the trick. I needed to eat healthy and sleep properly. I limited my intake of white rice and ate more hard-boiled eggs, boiled camotes, fruits and vegetables. I would also skip dinner and sleep for at least six (6) hours every night. Come Christmas Day of 2016, I weighed 160 lbs. I was still twenty (20) pounds away from my target. Hence, I decided to carry on with it in 2017. By July 2017, alas, I weighed 145 lbs.
For 2018, my New Year’s resolution is to gain muscle mass. This means that I need to find a gym, reorient myself to a gym plan and eat more to be able to lift weights. Quite honestly, I have not started this journey yet and it is already January 7. I am still trying to mentally condition myself. Oh excuses! LOL. I guess I should also add a FITNESS category in my blog site. That could and should motivate me to go to the gym… para sa blog! (for online content). Good luck to me!
Further, I will avoid sitting too often for too long. Studies show that sitting can kill you. For the news feature, click here. Sitting is sedentary, i.e., sitting in your car, sitting at your desk, sitting in front of the television. All of these activities are sedentary and thus slow down metabolism. What happens when metabolism slows down? Weight gain!
Therefore, I should not really mind walking that extra mile (literally). I should not really mind giving up my seat in the metro or bus. I should not really mind at all. Talk about mind conditioning, mind you. LOL.
